Slewing Bearing Seal Replacement Guide

Applicable Machines: Excavators and similar hydraulic machinery

1. Tools and Materials Required

  • High-quality replacement slewing bearing seal (cut to OEM-specified length)

  • Flathead screwdriver

  • 502 adhesive (cyanoacrylate glue)

  • Cleaning rags or solvent

2. Step-by-Step Replacement Procedure

  1. Clean the Seal Groove

    • Remove all oil, grease, and debris to ensure proper seating of the new seal.

  2. Prepare the Replacement Seal

    • Cut the seal to the OEM-specified length.

    • Have a tube of 502 adhesive ready for the joint.

  3. Install the Seal

    • Using a flathead screwdriver, gently stretch the seal to fit the groove.

    • Ensure it sits evenly along the entire circumference.

  4. Seal Joint Preparation

    • Cut the ends of the seal at a mitered angle.

    • Apply 502 adhesive to the joint.

    • After curing, place the joint into the groove.

    • (Tip: Simple, like “fitting an elephant into a fridge” — just a bit of humor to illustrate simplicity.)

3. Important Notes

  • Grease leakage is not caused by seal failure.

    • The seal primarily prevents dust and dirt ingress, not grease outflow.

    • It is a single-direction seal with limited sealing force.

4. Common Causes of Grease Leakage

Cause Description
Over-lubrication Excessive grease pumped into the slewing bearing.
Immersion in water Prolonged exposure to deep water causes grease degradation.
Hydraulic seal failure Leaks from hydraulic components allow oil into the slewing bearing grease groove, causing overflow. (Frequently observed.)
Slewing bearing wear Excessive mechanical wear creates gaps for grease to escape. (Also common.)

5. Recommended Practices

  • Inspect the bearing for excessive wear before installing the seal.

  • Only use high-quality seals meeting OEM specifications.

  • Ensure proper adhesive curing at the seal joint to maintain integrity.

  • Avoid over-lubrication during maintenance to prevent premature leakage.
